New Features

Finance Charges (Now Available)

Finance Charges have completed beta and are now available to all practices.

Finance Charges allow practices to automatically assess fees on overdue invoices. This helps manage outstanding balances while giving practices control over how charges are calculated and when they apply. Once enabled, Shepherd generates a separate finance charge invoice when an unpaid invoice meets your configured criteria. Learn more here.

Finance Charges can be enabled directly through Admin > Clinic Settings > Financial Settings > Finance Charges

Recurring Payment Plans (Now Available)

Recurring payments have completed beta and are now available to all practices.

Recurring Payments provides a built-in way to automate scheduled billing for a client’s outstanding balance using Shepherd Pay. Practices can set up payment plans that charge a saved payment method on a repeating schedule. Learn more here.

Recurring payments can be enabled directly through Admin > Clinic Settings > Financial Settings > Shepherd Pay > Enable Recurring Payments

Default Charges by Appointment Type

Shepherd now allows practices to configure Default Charges for individual Appointment Types, automatically adding commonly used products and services to the Order Treatments section of the SOAP Plan when a patient is checked in from a scheduled appointment.

Default Charges configuration is available under Admin > Scheduling > Appointment Types > Edit Appointment Type

Treatments must still be confirmed/administered before they are included on the invoice (and in the medical record). Also, default charges do not appear on estimates and do not support prescriptions at this time.

Wellness Plans (Now Available)

Wellness Plans have completed beta and are now available to all practices.

Wellness Plans allow practices to offer preventive or condition-specific care packages that promote consistent patient care and strengthen client loyalty. Plans can be recurring for ongoing care or one-time for specific life stages such as puppy or kitten packages.

With Shepherd Wellness Plans, practices can configure plans end to end, track included products and services as they are used, and reference plan details throughout daily workflows. Visual indicators appear across calendars, patient profiles, and within SOAP to make enrollment status and usage easy to identify at a glance. Learn more here.

Patient Discounts

Practices can now apply discounts at the individual patient level, independent of client discounts or Wellness Plan enrollment. Patient discounts can be configured from the patient profile under Edit > Patient Discounts, and Shepherd will automatically apply whichever eligible discount is highest at the time of invoicing.

Automated Appointment Schedule Export

Practices can now automatically email a PDF of upcoming appointment schedules to selected team members, eliminating the need to manually export appointment calendars each day. Automated exports help teams prepare for upcoming appointments, particularly for mobile clinics or locations with limited internet access, by delivering a configurable schedule summary directly to users' inboxes. Exports are automatically generated for upcoming scheduled clinic days when appointments exist, with no additional day-of-week scheduling required.

Auto appointment schedule export can be enabled through Admin > Scheduling > Settings > Enable Automated Daily Appointment Export

Once enabled, an Auto Export Calendar configuration tab appears

Feature Updates

Default Dose Unit for Injectables

Shepherd now allows practices to configure the default dose unit used for injectable medications. A new Injection Default Dose Unit setting gives practices the flexibility to choose whether injectable treatments default to a medication-based dosage (mg/kg) or a volume-based dose (per mL), while still allowing staff to override the unit when needed for individual patients or treatments.

  • Added Injection Default Dose Unit under Admin → Clinic Settings → Clinical Settings → Default Dose

    • Dosage — product-defined medication-per-weight unit (e.g., mg/kg)

    • Dose — volume-based unit (e.g., mL)

Diagnostics Now Available in Quick SOAP

Quick SOAP now has the ability to include diagnostics. Once an order has been placed, there is a dedicated Diagnostics section beneath Visit Notes and above the Laboratory tile. This functions the same as diagnostics within a full Comprehensive SOAP.

Inventory Quantity on Hand (QOH) History

Shepherd now provides a dedicated QOH (Quantity on Hand) History for inventory items, giving practices a complete audit trail of inventory quantity changes over time.

Users can review inventory activity directly from an inventory item, quickly identify what changed inventory levels, and export the history for reconciliation, reporting, or compliance purposes. If needed for auditing, there are separate All History and QOH History views within the Activity Log

Shepherd AI Updates

TranscribeAI Pause Button

TranscribeAI's recording experience has been updated with clearer recording controls and improved messaging to make it easier for users to understand when a recording is paused, stopped, being reviewed, or ending. These changes reduce confusion during dictation sessions and create a more intuitive workflow across both Quick SOAP and Comprehensive SOAP.

TranscribeAI Reliability Improvements

Significant infrastructure improvements have been made to TranscribeAI to improve recording reliability, browser compatibility, and troubleshooting capabilities. Along with many of the infrastructure improvements, you will now receive a visual warning when audio stops being transcribed or when a microphone interruption is detected.

You will also receive a notification when local recovery data cannot be saved due to browser storage limitations.

Integration Updates

CareCredit Integration Now Available

The CareCredit integration has completed beta and is now available to all practices.

Shepherd's CareCredit credit card integration brings financing workflows directly into the tools your team already uses for appointments, invoicing, and checkout. Rather than switching between systems, your team can manage CareCredit applications, payments, refunds, and account lookups without leaving Shepherd. Learn more here.

  • Enable and Run Batch Quickscreen to automatically identify preapproved clients and existing cardholders before checkout begins

  • Launch CareCredit applications, payments, and refunds directly from the invoice and checkout workflow

  • Send secure application or payment links to clients' mobile devices for contactless and exam-room workflows

  • View CareCredit financing status icons on SOAP pages, invoices, appointment tiles, and the CareCredit dashboard

  • Track CareCredit transactions separately from legacy standalone CareCredit activity in the End of Day Report

Shepherd Lens — Early Access

Clinically meaningful mobility and lameness changes often only appear in a pet's home environment — not on the exam table. Shepherd Lens (powered by Companion Vision) gives your clients a way to capture short videos of their pet moving at home, and uses AI to flag subtle gait changes that are easy to miss in a busy clinic or impossible to observe in patients who shut down in a hospital setting.

Early access is now open.
