IDEXX Web PACS: Activation and Setup

Set up IDEXX Web PACS in Shepherd by creating credentials, linking a location, registering modalities, and configuring your capture station.

Navigate to: Admin > Integrations > IDEXX PACS Integration

The IDEXX Web PACS integration connects imaging studies captured at your clinic to the correct patient and SOAP in Shepherd. Three systems work together to complete this workflow.

Acquires images and communicates with WebPACS using DICOM settings (AE Title, IP address, port, worklist).

Shepherd does not store DICOM image files. The integration gives the originating clinic access to the IDEXX-hosted study through WebPACS. If image files need to exist as attachments in Shepherd, they must be manually uploaded.

Understanding which system owns each part of the workflow is the most useful foundation for troubleshooting. If an order generates correctly in Shepherd but never reaches the imaging workstation, the problem is between WebPACS and the capture station — not in Shepherd's product setup.

What You Need to Know

Copy your password before leaving the screen.

The integration password generated in IDEXX Web PACS cannot be viewed again after you navigate away. Copy it immediately using the copy icon and save it securely. If you lose it, you will need to generate a new one.

The Location Token and Account Number are different fields.

The Location Token identifies your WebPACS location and is pasted into the Location field in Shepherd. The Account Number is your IDEXX SAP ID and goes in the Account Number field. Your SAP ID can be found in your VetConnect Plus settings — not in WebPACS. Entering one in the wrong field is one of the most common setup failures.

Use your existing WebPACS location — do not create a duplicate.

If your practice already has a location in IDEXX Web PACS, use its existing Location Token in Shepherd. Creating a second location when one already exists can cause integration issues.

Your modality type must exactly match what is registered in IDEXX Web PACS.

CR, DX, IO, and US are not interchangeable modality types. If the modality registered in WebPACS does not match what Shepherd is mapping, imaging orders will not route correctly.

Any change to integration settings requires a modality resync.

After updating credentials, location, or modality settings, go to Admin > Products > Imaging Integration Products and click Sync IDEXX PACS Modalities to reconnect. If your practice is part of a group and shares products, run the sync from the group platform (group.shepherd.vet) under Imaging Integration Products instead.

What You'll Need

Access required:

  • Shepherd: Admin > Integrations > IDEXX PACS Integration

  • Your IDEXX Web PACS account (via VetConnect Plus)

  • Your capture station configuration

You will generate or confirm these during setup:

  • Integration User ID and Password (created in IDEXX Web PACS)

  • Location Token (from IDEXX Web PACS)

  • IDEXX Account Number (SAP number)

  • AE Title, IP address, and port for the IDEXX Web PACS server

  • Your capture station's Local AE Title, Institution Name, and modality type


Step 1: Create Credentials in IDEXX Web PACS

  1. Log into IDEXX Web PACS using your VetConnect Plus credentials.

  2. Select the Gear icon in the top right corner.

  3. Go to Location Information.

  4. Select Add User ID and Password.

  5. Enter a source name (for example, Shepherd) to identify this integration.

  6. Copy the User ID and Password using the copy icons.

Save both values securely before leaving this screen. The password cannot be viewed again once you navigate away.

Step 2: Connect a Location in IDEXX Web PACS

If a location already exists

  1. Use the existing location.

  2. Copy the Location Token for use in Shepherd.

If you are unsure whether a location exists in your account, or run into any issues creating one, contact IDEXX Diagnostic Imaging Support before proceeding. Do not create a new location if one may already exist under a different name — duplicates can cause integration issues. Phone: 1-877-433-9948

If no location exists

  1. Click Add Location.

  2. Name it clearly (for example, Shepherd or your clinic name).

  3. Save to generate a Location Token.

  4. Copy the token for Shepherd setup.

Step 3: Activate the Integration in Shepherd

  1. In Shepherd, go to Admin > Integrations > IDEXX PACS Integration.

  2. Under Credentials, enter:

    • Username: User ID from Step 1

    • Password: Password from Step 1

    • Account Number: Your IDEXX SAP ID

  3. Select Validate Credentials.

  4. Toggle Active to on.

  5. Click Save.

Once saved:

  • Select Add Location and paste the Location Token from Step 2.

  • Add a clear name for the location.

  • Click Validate to confirm the connection.

If you make any changes to this screen after the integration is enabled, go to Admin > Products > Imaging Integration Products and click Sync IDEXX PACS Modalities to re-enable the connection.

Step 4: Register a Modality in IDEXX Web PACS

If modalities are already registered in IDEXX Web PACS: You may not need to add new ones. Check that each existing modality has a location assigned, and that the location name matches the location token you validated in Shepherd in Step 3. Every modality listed in WebPACS should have a location registered — any without one will not be available to sync into Shepherd. Leaving any location field blank can interfere with the modality sync in Shepherd and cause a sync failed error.

  1. In IDEXX Web PACS, select the Gear icon in the top right corner.

  2. Click Receiving Images.

  3. Select Add Local Modality.

  4. Enter the following:

    • AE Title: The unique local AE Title for the imaging equipment (see note below)

    • Institution Name: Name registered with Web PACS

    • Modality: Imaging type for this equipment (for example, DX, CR, US, IO)

    • Location: The location from Step 2

  5. Check all three boxes:

    • Enter on Radiology Log

    • Return "Not Requested"

    • Accept Accession #

  6. Click Register.

AE Title note: The IDEXX Web PACS server AE Title is DCM4CHEE_MAIN. This is not your device's local AE Title. The local AE Title is a unique value that identifies a specific piece of imaging equipment. It must match exactly what is registered here in WebPACS and must also match what is configured in your capture station.

Step 5: Configure the Radiology Computer

Option A: IDEXX PACS (IDEXX-branded capture software)

On the capture station:

  1. Open the IDEXX Capture Station software.

  2. In Remote Servers, configure IDEXX Web PACS with the following:

    • Server name: IDEXX Web PACS

    • Server Address: 54.208.114.60

    • Port: 11112

    • AE Title: DCM4CHEE_MAIN

  3. In the dropdowns, set:

    • MWL SCP: IDEXX Web PACS

    • MPPS SCP: IDEXX Web PACS

The Server Name entered in this step is what will appear in the MWL SCP/MPPS SCP dropdown.

Option B: Third-Party Capture Station

If using non-IDEXX software (for example, eFilm, ViewPoint, or MedView):

  1. Work with your vendor's support team.

  2. Configure a remote DICOM server:

    • Server Name: IDEXX Web PACS

    • AE Title: DCM4CHEE_MAIN

    • IP Address: 54.208.114.60

    • Port: 11112

  3. Enable Auto Routing if available.

  4. Enable Modality Worklist (MWL) and point it to Web PACS with the same configuration.

  5. Record your local system details for reference:

    • Local AE Title

    • Institution Name

    • System modality (for example, CR, DX, US)

IDEXX may not be able to configure or connect remotely to third-party imaging equipment. If the capture station cannot communicate with WebPACS after configuration, your equipment vendor may need to participate in troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting

Validate Credentials fails:

  • Confirm the User ID and Password match what was generated in IDEXX Web PACS.

  • Confirm the Account Number field contains your IDEXX SAP ID — not the Location Token.

  • Ensure your network allows communication with IDEXX Web PACS servers.

  • Confirm AE Titles are unique and consistent across systems.

A modality does not appear after syncing:

Check the following before syncing again:

  • Is the modality registered under Receiving Images in IDEXX Web PACS? Shepherd cannot map a modality that WebPACS is not exposing.

  • Is it registered under the correct location?

  • Is the correct Location Token entered in Shepherd?

  • Does the modality type match what the equipment actually uses (for example, CR vs. DX)?

  • Does the local AE Title match exactly what is configured in the capture station?

  • Have credentials changed recently?

  • Has Sync IDEXX PACS Modalities been run after the most recent integration change?

Settings look correct but the UI does not reflect recent changes:

Perform a hard browser refresh after any integration or product change.

  • Windows: Ctrl + Shift + R

  • Mac: Cmd + Shift + R

Does IDEXX Web PACS integrate with Midmark Progeny dental X-ray systems?
