Windows Trackpad Scrolling Not Working

If two-finger scrolling stops working on a Windows trackpad, toggling the touchpad setting off and back on can often restore functionality.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Purpose

This article explains a known Windows-related issue where two-finger trackpad scrolling may stop working on your laptop and how to resolve it.

Because this behavior is caused by Windows system settings and hardware drivers, Shepherd cannot control or prevent it, but the steps below can quickly restore normal scrolling.

Issue Overview

Some Windows users may experience an issue where:

  • Two-finger scrolling stops working on the trackpad

  • Scrolling is enabled in settings but does not respond

  • The issue appears suddenly without changes in Shepherd

This is typically caused by a mismatch between Windows gesture settings, drivers, and hardware state.

Resolution: Reset Trackpad Scrolling

The most reliable fix is to toggle the touchpad scrolling setting off and back on.

Steps

  1. Open Windows Settings

  2. Navigate to Bluetooth & Devices β†’ Touchpad

  3. Locate the Scroll & Zoom or Two-finger scrolling setting

  4. Disable the setting

  5. Re-enable the setting

This action resets the trackpad gesture state and often restores scrolling immediately.

Why This Happens

This issue is not caused by Shepherd and is related to how Windows manages trackpad input.

Windows trackpad gestures rely on multiple layers:

  • Hardware (trackpad device)

  • Manufacturer drivers

  • Windows gesture system

Sometimes these layers fall out of sync, where:

  • Scrolling appears enabled but is not active

  • The system does not correctly recognize gesture input

Toggling the setting forces Windows to reinitialize the gesture system, which resolves the mismatch.

Additional Troubleshooting

If the issue continues after toggling the setting:

Check for Driver Updates

  • Open Device Manager

  • Locate your Touchpad or Human Interface Device

  • Update to the latest driver version

Outdated or mismatched drivers are a common cause of scrolling issues.

Restart Your Device

A full restart can reset hardware and driver states.

Check for Conflicting Settings

Certain system behaviors may disable or override scrolling:

  • Connecting an external mouse

  • Recent Windows updates resetting settings

  • Manufacturer-specific touchpad software overrides

These can affect whether gestures function correctly.

Notes and Limitations

  • This is a Windows and hardware-level issue, not a Shepherd issue

  • Shepherd runs in the browser and cannot control trackpad behavior

  • The toggle fix may need to be repeated if the issue returns

  • Behavior may vary depending on device manufacturer and driver implementation
