Production vs Commission
While similar, production and commission are a little different. Production can be tracked without commission or these can be used together if the user/veterinarian is paid on a commission basis.
Production tracking: tracks any services or treatments that are administered under a user, generally the supervising doctor in the SOAP
Commission: the percentage of revenue a user receives from the production tracked (the total of services or treatments administered)
Why Should I Track Production?
Tracking production is a tangible way to measure not only how much revenue each production user is generating, but also compliance and patient care per user. Even if you don't give commission to those production users, it's a powerful tool for insight into patient care and different users' strengths and weaknesses.
How Does Commission Work?
When production tracking is enabled, you have the option to also include a commission percentage that will automatically be calculated on the production report.
Configuring Production Tracking
As mentioned earlier, setting up production tracking is a great way to measure overall performance β even if a user is not paid a commission. To best support your clinic's ideal production tracking preferences, Shepherd offers several customization settings.
Default Assignment Behavior
Under Admin > Clinic Settings > Settings > Production Settings - Shepherd offers a customization setting to elect your account's preferred default Production User assignment behavior.
When enabled, the setting 'Prevent overriding of supervising doctor as the default production user assignment', the default production user assignment within a SOAP for administered services or treatments will always assign to the supervising doctor. This includes if an administering user also has production enabled.
When the setting is disabled, if the treatment administering user has production tracking enabled, the production user assignment will automatically default to the administering user.
Enabling Production + Commission for Users
In order to start using production tracking, you first need to enable production for each user that you wish to monitor production for.
Navigate to Admin -> Users
Search for the user and select their name
Enable the Track Production toggle
This will populate fields for product categories and if applicable, the commission percentage the user will receive
Note: If you don't want to track commission, leave all percentage fields at 0
Customizing Production Tracking for Prescription Refills
Within each product category's configuration, there is an option to include Rx refills in production tracking (or not). Rx refills will always be tracked under the current prescribing doctor.
To manage prescription refill production, navigate to Admin -> Products
Select the Product Categories tab
Select a product category to edit
Toggle on (or off) the 'Refills Count Towards Production' setting
Select 'Save'
Setting up Commission Tracking
Once production tracking is enabled for a user, you can enter a commission percentage for each product category.
User commission settings can be found by following: Admin -> Users -> Select a user profile -> Production Tracking
Note: You can also adjust commission percentages for each user from within a product category.
Tracking Production/Commission by User
Who receives the production credit?
Production is tracked per treatment and will generally be tracked under the supervising doctor assigned to the SOAP at the time of service administration.
You can customize if the administering user overrides the supervising doctor as the production user.
Alternatively, if no supervising doctor is assigned to the SOAP, production can still be tracked, but instead under the assigned user of the SOAP. This workflow is helpful if you track production and commission for a general team such as your technician team, or the clinic as a whole. Please ensure you have a general team or clinic user profile created first to select as the assigned user.

NOTE: The production user can be updated if a correction is needed.
Reviewing and Updating the Production User
Production user assignments can be easily reviewed from the Invoice tab of a SOAP. If production was tracked under the incorrect user, or no user at all, you can correct the user under Tx History in the SOAP or on the invoice line item.
Tx History
To update the production under Tx History, select the three dots icon under Actions for that line item and then select the new production user and click Apply.
Invoice
To update the production user on the invoice, select the three dots under Actions for that line item and then select the new production user and click Save.
