It’s one thing for a patient to be protected against rabies, but it’s another thing entirely to be able to prove it. Thankfully, you can easily generate a rabies certificate with Shepherd.
Note: If a rabies vaccine was administered for the patient within Shepherd, you can skip to Step 4 to access existing Rabies Certificates.
Step 1: Open the Patient’s Dashboard
To open the patient’s dashboard:
Select ‘Clients/Patients’
Search for the patient’s name in the Search box
Select the patient
Step 2: Open the Patient’s Vaccination Records
With the patient’s dashboard open, select the ‘Vaccinations’ tab.

If the patient has had a vaccine administered in a Shepherd medical record, it will appear in the ‘Vaccinations’ list below. However, if the patient’s vaccination lives on another medical record that you have access to, you’ll need to add a vaccination.
Tip: You can manually add old vaccines to a patient's profile and attach current reminders in Shepherd. Follow these steps to add a previous vaccine.
Step 3: Create the Rabies Certificate
With the vaccination accounted for:
Select the ‘Add Rabies Certificate’ button at the bottom of the ‘Vaccinations’ section. This will take you to the ‘Add Rabies Certificate’ screen.
Select the vaccination you want to be on the record
Enter a rabies tag ID
Add any applicable notes
Select the supervising doctor
Select the 'Save' button
This will automatically generate and open a rabies certificate with your practice information, the client’s contact information, and all relevant patient information.

Optional Step: Printing the Certificate
After you've created a new rabies certificate and opened it in a new tab, you’ll be able to print the certificate directly from this view by clicking on the 'Print' icon.
Step 4: Accessing the Certificate
The certificate will now live within the patient’s medical record in Shepherd. To access it at any time:
Make sure you’re in the ‘Vaccines’ section of the patient’s dashboard
Navigate to ‘Certificates’ at the bottom of the screen
Select the downward arrow to the right of the ‘Add Rabies Certificate’ button. This will expand all rabies certificates in the patient’s Shepherd record.

With the certificates all visible, you’re able to:
Download
Rename
Delete
Optional Step: Emailing the Certificate:
With the certificates list expanded:
Select the three dots to the right of the certificate
Select ‘Download’
Open your practice email
Compose a new email to the client
Attach the certificate (via your Downloads folder) to the email
