It’s one thing for a patient to be protected against rabies, but it’s another thing entirely to be able to prove it. Thankfully, you can easily generate a rabies certificate with Shepherd.

Tip: we have a walkthrough for creating a rabies certificate if you want something a bit more interactive.

Step 1: Open the Patient’s Dashboard

To open the patient’s dashboard:

  1. Click on ‘Clients/Patients’

  2. Search for the patient’s name in the Search box

  3. Click on the patient

Step 2: Open the Patient’s Vaccination Records

With the patient’s dashboard open, click the ‘Vaccines’ tab in the group of tabs below ‘Patient Weights.’

If the patient has had a vaccine administered in a Shepherd medical record, it will appear in the ‘Vaccinations’ list below. But if the patient’s vaccination lives on another medical record that you have access to, you’ll need to add a vaccination.

Optional Step: Add a Vaccination

To add a vaccination outside of a patient’s SOAP, click the ‘Add Vaccination’ button on the right side of the ‘Vaccination’ section. This will take you to the ‘Add Vaccination’ screen.

On the ‘Add Vaccination’ screen, you’ll need to enter the following information:

  • Vaccine name

  • Manufacturer

  • Serial number

  • Lot number

  • Vaccine lot expiration

  • Administration date

  • Due date

  • Verified by

  • Any relevant notes

Once all the information is entered, click the ‘Save’ button at the bottom.

After you’ve saved the vaccine, it will populate in the ‘Vaccines’ list.

Step 3: Create the Certificate

With the vaccination accounted for:

  1. Click the ‘Add Rabies Certificate’ button at the bottom of the ‘Vaccinations’ section. This will take you to the ‘Add Rabies Certificate’ screen.

  2. Select the vaccination you want to be on the record

  3. Enter a rabies tag ID

  4. Add any applicable notes

  5. Select the supervising doctor

  6. Save

By clicking the ‘Save’ button at the bottom of the screen, you’ll automatically generate a rabies certificate with your practice information, the client’s contact information, and all relevant patient information.

Optional Step: Printing the Certificate

After you've created a new rabies certificate and opened it in a new tab, you’ll be able to print the certificate directly from this view by clicking on the 'Print' icon.

Step 4: Accessing the Certificate

The certificate will now live within the patient’s medical record in Shepherd. To access it at any time:

  1. Make sure you’re in the ‘Vaccines’ section of the patient’s dashboard

  2. Navigate to ‘Certificates’ at the bottom of the screen

  3. Click on the downward arrow to the right of the ‘Add Rabies Certificate’ button. This will populate all rabies certificates in the patient’s Shepherd record.

With the certificates all visible, you’re able to do a few things with each certificate by clicking the three dots on the right side of each certificate’s tile:

  • Download

  • Rename

  • Delete

Optional Step: Emailing the Certificate:

With the certificates list populated (see above):

  1. Click the three circles

  2. Select ‘Download’

  3. Open your practice email

  4. Compose a new email to the client

  5. Attach the certificate (via your Downloads folder) to the email
