AI Features Overview

Shepherd includes three AI tools designed to support different parts of the clinical workflow. Each tool serves a distinct purpose — understanding which tool does what will help you get the most out of Shepherd's AI capabilities.

AI Tools at a Glance

Provides clinical decision support from within an open SOAP. Analyzes the patient's SOAP Subjective to suggest differential diagnoses, treatment ideas, and AI-generated discharge instructions.

Records and transcribes exam-room conversation directly into SOAP fields. Use it to capture the visit as it happens without manual note-taking.

Summarizes a patient's existing medical history from their records. Use it to quickly review a patient's background before or during a visit.

If you are unsure which tool to use:

  • Recording the visit = TranscribeAI

  • Reviewing patient history = SummarizeAI

  • Differentials, treatment ideas, or discharge instructions = DiagnoseAI.



Enabling AI Features

DiagnoseAI, SummarizeAI and TranscribeAI must be enabled before they are available to your practice.

To enable any of these features, navigate to Admin > Clinic Settings > AI Settings, toggle the feature on, then click Save.

Controlling Access to AI Settings

To control which users can enable or disable AI Settings, update the AI Settings permission within user roles at Admin > Users > Roles > Edit Role > Permissions > Admin Tab - check AI Settings.

AI Settings permissions only control who can turn on or off the feature clinic-wide, not who has individual access to DiagnoseAI, SummarizeAI or TranscribeAI.


Frequently Asked Questions

Which AI tool generates discharge instructions?

Discharge instructions are generated by DiagnoseAI. Open a SOAP note, click DiagnoseAI in the top right corner, and ask the assistant to create discharge instructions for the visit. See the DiagnoseAI article for guidance on getting the best results.

Do AI tools automatically write into the SOAP?

TranscribeAI and DiagnoseAI both require a manual confirmation step before content is applied to the SOAP. TranscribeAI output is reviewed and synced during the verification window. DiagnoseAI suggestions must be manually documented in the appropriate SOAP fields — they do not insert automatically.

Which AI tools are available in Quick SOAPs?
