Zoetis Reference Labs (ZRL) Integration: Setup

Connect Shepherd with Zoetis Reference Labs to order, manage, and invoice diagnostic tests directly from patient records.

Purpose

The Zoetis Reference Labs (ZRL) integration connects Shepherd with Zoetis Reference Labs to streamline diagnostic testing workflows. Clinics can order, track, and invoice ZRL diagnostic services directly from a patient’s record. This integration reduces manual entry, ensures billing accuracy, and provides a seamless way to manage lab diagnostics within Shepherd.


Integration Overview

With the ZRL integration connected to Shepherd, you can:

  • Add and Invoice ZRL Services Automatically
    Order any ZRL test from a patient’s SOAP, and have it automatically added to invoices.

  • Access Zoetis’ Full Diagnostic Library
    Use Shepherd’s integrated product list to view, activate, and customize lab services.

  • Order Directly from a SOAP
    Add and administer tests within the patient workflow, keeping all diagnostics connected.

  • Receive and Review Results in Shepherd
    Completed results automatically populate in the SOAP for easy access and recordkeeping.


Activating the ZRL Integration

What You Need

  • Zoetis Reference Labs (ZRL) credentials
    To obtain credentials, contact your Zoetis Diagnostic Technical Specialist (DTS).

Setting up the integration within Shepherd

  1. In Shepherd, go to Admin → Integrations.

  2. Select Zoetis Reference Laboratories Integration from the list.

  3. On the integration page, enter your:

    • Username

    • Clinic ID

    • Password

  4. Click Save - your credentials will be stored but not yet verified.

  5. Toggle Active next to Credentials.

  6. Click Save again to validate your credentials.

If credentials fail to validate, double-check your entry or contact your Zoetis DTS.

Once credentials are validated, the integration will be enabled and diagnostic services will begin downloading into Shepherd under Admin → Products → Lab Integration Products → ZRL Products.

The initial sync typically takes 5–30 minutes depending on your internet speed.


Adding ZRL Services

While you’ll have access to ZRL’s full diagnostic library, your practice may not need every service. You can selectively add and customize services in Shepherd.

Best Practice

If you already have ZRL services in Shepherd that are not mapped, we recommend:

  • Renaming them to make it clear they are not mapped to ZRL, or

  • Deactivating them to avoid confusion.

Adding a Service

  1. Go to Admin → Products → Lab Integrated Products → ZRL Products.

  2. Turn off the Show Mapped toggle to see unmapped ZRL services.

  3. Search for a test by name or code.

  4. Select Edit on the right-hand side

  5. Toggle Active to add it to your mapped products.

  6. Select Product Settings to:

    • Edit the test name

    • Adjust pricing

    • Customize product settings

Batch Adding Services

You can check multiple services and select Add to Products to map them in bulk.
Then enable Show Mapped to edit or customize them.

Pricing and Markup

  • You can set a default markup on the main ZRL Products page. This markup applies automatically to new services as they are mapped.

  • Updating the default markup later will not retroactively adjust already mapped services.

  • The markup is applied to ZRL's standard list price.
