We’re excited to support barcode capabilities for inventory items, enhancing efficiency in product and inventory lookup and management!
Key Features:
Define Barcodes for Inventory Items – Barcodes can now be assigned to inventory items for quick identification.
Barcode Scanning for All Searches – All search fields now recognize barcodes to recall associated products or inventory items instantly.
No Equipment Restrictions – Barcode scanning is compatible with all known scanning hardware.
Barcode features streamline inventory handling, making searches and accurate product retrieval efficient and seamless!
Adding Barcodes
Each inventory item includes a dedicated barcode field within its general details. Only one barcode can be assigned per item, which can be entered manually or scanned for accuracy.
Barcodes can be added individually to specific inventory items or in bulk using the Bulk Edit → Inventory feature. The bulk edit workflow streamlines the process, allowing you to assign multiple barcodes efficiently using the designated barcode field.
Supported Barcode Scanners
There are no Equipment Restrictions – Barcode scanning is compatible with all known scanning hardware.
It is recommended to disable the 'Enter' feature on your scanners, as it can disrupt seamless searching in Shepherd.
Searching by Barcode or Barcode Scanning
Any search field that references products or inventory items supports barcode-based searches.
If multiple inventory items share the same barcode, all associated inventory and retail code items will appear in search results.
Viewing Inventory Barcodes
The Inventory Items Report includes a dedicated column that displays all items with assigned barcodes, allowing for easy review and reference.
Troubleshooting
Why does a different barcode appear in Shepherd when I scan an item?
If the barcode displayed in Shepherd differs from the one you scanned, check that your keyboard language settings are consistent across all workstations. A mismatch in keyboard language settings between when the barcode was originally entered and when it is searched can lead to incorrect results, including missing search matches or altered barcode sequences.
Why am I receiving multiple matches?
If you unexpectedly receive multiple matches when searching by barcode, check the barcodes assigned to each related inventory item. This occurs when multiple items share the same barcode.
In a Multi-Location configuration where products are shared, different locations may assign a barcode to an inventory item that links to a different product code than expected. As a result, all products associated with the searched barcode will appear in the results.
Why am I not finding the item I’m searching for?
If you’re not receiving any expected matches, check whether the item's manufacturer has updated its barcode. If the barcode has changed, you must update the existing barcode in Shepherd before it can be successfully retrieved in search results.
